The Barr’s go walk-about in Sweden

The official Bearsden Curling Club Roving Reporter (RR) has yet again been commissioned to bring back reports related to Ross Barr’s (BCC President) progress during the 2024 World Senior Curling Federation Championships to be held in Östersund Sweden between the 20th and 27th of April. Ross will be playing for Ireland during the competition.

RR has the responsible task of providing the Club with wide ranging reports that will include the progress of individual nation teams – both Men and Woman. To make it easy for RR here are links to the results as they happen –

Things Get Serious

After a few days in the North of Sweden in the Karuna area, the Barr’s have now arrived in Ostersund at the WCF Seniors Curling Championships. Practice ice this morning at 8.00am, first game tomorrow morning against Germany.

First game for Ireland

Reporting from a beautiful sunny Ostersund.  The first game of the Championship for the Irish Senior Men did not go to plan.  The result didn’t reflect the game against Andy Kapp’s German team. Ireland played well and were one behind playing the 7th trying to steal and the gamble didn’t pay off. Next up Poland today at 1500 BST.

Leisurely Start

Today was a leisurely start with a walk round the lake to the snowy slopes, coffee and a return to the rink for 4pm game.

A 8-3 win for the Irish Senior Men against Poland in their second game put them on 1 – 1.  Next game is tomorrow at 07:00 BST against Nigeria.

The Developing Nigerian Team

The game today against a rapidly improving Nigerian team was a bit of a rollercoaster early on but we ran out 15-8 winners in the end.  Next up Scotland tomorrow in a must win game for both teams.  On the ice at 4pm….

Out and about we saw some interesting transport.

Scotland versus Ireland

Roving Reporter reporting from Ostersund on the final two Irish games.

Team Ireland fell a little short against Scotland in a fairly tight contest that came down as ever to one or two shots that were made or not quite made depending on your allegiance. Scotland scoring 3 in the first end was definitely not in the game plan and Ireland struggled to impose themselves on the contest.

On to the New Zealand game.

Whether it was the hangover from losing to Scotland the previous day, hanging around to play one game at 8pm or the fact that the game against a steady NZ team was a dead rubber, the Irish Senior Men had a massively disappointing end to their 2024 campaign.

Good luck to all of the quarter finalists – we hope to be celebrating with you at a layer date.  🥳🥳

Pickled Herring Dilemma

Despite repeated requests our foreign correspondent (RR) has not provided a full account of Swedish cuisine. Where is the pickled herring (could you bring some home for me please), Räksmörgås and other open sandwiches, Kanelbulle (cinnamon bun). There is time left; fingers crossed.

Scottish Progress

Last hope for Scottish Team Thomson on FB 6.00 tonight v Canada Semi Final Men will be disappointed.

The Final Countdown

Turning to culinary events in Sweden…… while in Karuna we we experienced reindeer tartar, reindeer casserole and moose burger, all of which were very tasty.  Costs of eating out very similar to the UK, slightly higher.

Scotland have had a disappointing couple of days with the men being knocked out Andy Kapp, and the Ladies had a loss to Canada.

This morning is a new day and we are at the Curling Rink to watch Scotland Ladies push to get a medal. Both Canadian teams are playing in the Gold Medal game.
